The Art & Science of Teaching by Robert Marzano

Throughout my career, I found it difficult to eloquently describe my educational philosophy.

However, a few years ago, I had the opportunity to dive deeply into Robert Marzano’s Research regarding The Art and Science of Teaching. Through my own discoveries, I realized that Marzano had clearly defined education in a way that I had struggled to do so for many years. I ‘knew” what my educational philosophy was, but it was difficult to put it into words. Marzano Research describes teaching as both a “science” and an “art”, and when a teacher utilizes effective strategies in both, we see improved student performance.

~The Art of Teaching~

In regards to the “art” of teaching, Marzano’s research revealed that when teachers build relationships with children, manage their classrooms effectively and encourage their students’ engagement, performance improves–hence the “art” of teaching. When I visualize the “art” of teaching, the image of a heart comes to mind.

~The Science of Teaching~

In regards to the “science” of teaching, Marzano’s research revealed that how teachers present content and how they provide feedback can affect a child’s learning outcome. Paired with the most recent neurological research, it is evident that teachers can use particular strategies to present their content in a way to ensure ultimate learning–hence the “science” of teaching. When I visualize the “science” of teaching, the image of a human brain comes to mind.

As an instructional leader and coach, I have certainly witnessed teachers who were amazing at the “science” but lacked at the “art,” and visa-versa. But, when a teacher can use effective strategies in both, we find that children thrive. I believe that with an adequate amount of training and support, all teachers can find strategies in both the science and art of teaching to be effective in their practice.

If you haven’t explored Marzano’s The Art & Science of Teaching, I highly recommend it! It may just change the way you define effectiveness too!
